The National Credit Act was established to provide debt relief to the millions of South Africans who are over indebted and cannot make their monthly repayments. The Act also makes provisions to ensure that credit institutions and credit providers are transparent and do not behave in a reckless manner. This means that all credit agreements must be written in language that is easy to understand and that all clauses pertaining to interest charged or other fees that must be paid are clear and transparent. A credit provider that adheres to all the provisions of the Act can not be held responsible for the reckless spending of a consumer. At the same time, a credit provider who does not follow these provisions will be deemed reckless and severe fines and penalties will be enforced.

There are many credit card debt solutions available to help you get out of financial distress. You can approach a debt counsellor to provide you with a detailed solution to your unique debt problems. It is important to ensure that your debt counsellor is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) so that you receive the best advice possible. The NCR is not only in charge of accrediting all persons delivering debt review services but also responsible for ensuring that each and every debt counsellor is fully trained and qualified. The NCR also empowers the debt counsellor to mediate with any credit provider and intercede with the Magistrates court on your behalf.

Once you have gone through the debt review process and received credit card debt relief, it is important to take steps to ensure that you do not become over indebted again. This means that you should not enter into credit agreements with various institutions and that you should have no more than one credit card for emergencies only. The next thing to do is begin to save the money that you were previously spending on monthly repayments so that when you see something that you want to buy, you will have the cash to pay for it. This means that you will save yourself the interest and other hidden fees and costs that are part and parcel of any credit agreement. Enjoy your life but take responsibility and control over your financial future.

Once your credit counsellor has negotiated a lower interest rate and monthly repayment schedule with your creditors and on your behalf, you will have one monthly instalment to pay to the National Payment Distribution Agency or NPDA. It is important to note that this does not mean that you have gone through the process of debt consolidation and that you are still liable to pay your debt to each creditor. The amount that you pay to the NPDA is distributed amongst your creditors according to a payment schedule supplied to them by your credit counsellor. The process of paying one amount a month to one institution will make it easier for you to take control of your finances and meet your financial obligations.
