One thing about having your home or business updated with smart automation is that no two set-ups are ever the same. Unique automation solutions are the order of the day, since every single automation design is planned specifically for a particular building and its surrounds and for at specific client. When you think about it, unless two houses are identical, which is a rare occurrence these days, you are always going to have unique automation solutions. Civic has an extremely wide range of products to draw upon when drawing up a system for its individual clients, and this means that there are uncountable variations and combinations when putting the design together. When you realise that any of the following can be automated:
- Security system including fire detection and child monitoring
- All outdoor and interior lighting
- All remote appliances
- Garden irrigation and pool maintenance
- All audio-visual equipment
you begin to realise just how many different combinations there really are.
Unique automation solutions for a home can be on the one hand a very simple grouping of controls, or on the other hand it can be an automation extravaganza where just about anything that is plugged into electrical power is remotely controlled. While there is no way to know what the individual wants, their only limit to a smart home is his or her budget. Costs mainly include; equipment, components, furniture, and custom installation. If you are one of those discerning people considering the change, why not talk to one of our professional automation technicians about what unique automation solutions might be suitable for you.

Until you have seen one of our garden automation demonstrations you will have absolutely no idea of the amount that can be achieved with garden automation. Imagine having your very own son et lumière outside your front door. Strategically placed lights can transform a dark mass into wondrous patches of light and colour. Garden lighting can be programmed so that it automatically comes on or switches off depending on how much ambient light there is. Garden automation demonstrations will show you that, at the flick of a switch or even completely automatically, one garden picture can transform into a completely different landscape.
Of course garden automation is not just a matter of carefully planned light placements, as demonstrations will show. One of the main uses of automation in the garden is for irrigation. To maintain control over garden irrigation is extremely important, especially with a climate such as we have in South Africa. When you witness our demonstrations you will understand the use of moisture detectors in the form of buried probes that are placed at strategic spots in the garden. Readings from these detectors are fed into a central computer that controls a motorized system of water valves that activate when the moisture falls below a certain preset level. Such a system also allows you to set it so that water is only switched on between certain hours, preventing the undesirable irrigation in the full heat of the day. Garden automation allows you to have a perfectly watered garden even when you are away from home.

Smart home automation has taken a little time to catch on in South Africa. There are a number of reasons for this. Even under the best of circumstances the country can be up to three years behind some First World countries such as the United States as far as new technology is concerned. However what was a few years ago an expensive undertaking has now become much easier and closer to the pocket of the man in the street. Smart home automation once involved the protracted use of cables, one of the reasons why it was expensive. However, the automation industry has been modernized with the introduction of hi-tech wireless components, and so the average home automation installation has become easier, cheaper and far more versatile.
The degree to which a home may be automated depends very much on what the owner actually wants. It is possible for home automation to be completely smart where the occupants have to do virtually nothing once the system is set up. In such a home a sensor would automatically draw all of the curtains shut when the light faded outside or at a preset time. The same can be set up for house lights, which can be set to come on when light conditions fade and/or at a certain time and/or only in rooms that are actually occupied. One of the beauties of smart home automation is that no two systems are the same. What is controlled is entirely up to you. If you want music to follow you wherever you go in or around the house – Civic can organize that for you. Have a chat with one of our consultants – you’d be surprised at what we can achieve for you.
